Why Use Natural Handmade Soap?

Why Use Natural Handmade Soap?

The benefits of using handmade soap are many: simpler ingredients, fewer chemicals, natural vegetable oils instead of animal fats. All these things are important to many people today. The reasons to use a more natural, handmade product are not always obvious, however. Read on to learn more.
We live in a day and age where the technological advances are many. Cell phones, microwave breakfast, instant pototoes, digital TV, radios the size of a credit card…. Many of these advances are there to make our lives easier. However, when it comes to skin care and the ingredients you put on your skin, technology is probably not what you had in mind!
Why is Handmade Natural Soap so special?

Natural soaps are made in a time-honored fashion. It involves a very simple chemical reaction between oils (or fats) and lye (sodium hydroxide for bars). All soap is made with lye, but there is no lye in the finished product. The chemical reaction converts the lye/fat mixture to glycerin. The glycerin is a natural by-product and, as such, the relationship between the soap molecule and the glycerin means you have a cleanser with abundant, luxurious lather that cleans like nothing else. As a bonus, it does not strip your skin of its natural, protective oils.

Commercially made soap usually contains detergents, fillers, chemicals, petroleum, high animal fat content (read: sodium tallowate) and irritants like SLS or SLES (read our other articles about sulfates!). Commercially made soap tends to be less eco-friendly as well. While commercially manufactured soap usually costs less, the impact on your skin and the environment is shocking.

Natural handmade soaps are made with natural oils, have a high glycerin content, are better for the environment with no detergents, phosphates or sulfates, and are never tested on animals.

What is Natural Soap made of?

At Nee Nee’s Soap Shop, we use all-natural vegetable oils in our soaps. Each oil is carefully chosen for its cleansing properties in soap. Soybean and Coconut oils are the only oils we use. Our soybean oil is partially hydrogenated, vegan and as natural as we could find for cosmetic use. Shea butter adds essential moisturizing properties to the soaps we make, aiding in keeping your skin soft and supple. Goat’s Milk (read our articles here about that, too!) is also a natural, skin-friendly moisturizer that helps your skin maintain its pH balance, thus making your skin more healthy and better protected. Essential and fragrance oils contribute each soap’s unique scent; natural spices/herbs, oatmeal, and/or flower buds and plant leaves contribute texture. We use NO colorants or unnatural dyes in our soaps. What you see is what you get!

Why is Glycerin Important?

Glycerin is a humectant. It attracts moisture and gives it back to your skin. In natural and handmade soap making processes, one molecule of glycerin is created for every three molecules of soap. Commercial soap makers often remove the glycerin from their soap and then sell it to the cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries. With our natural soaps, however, all of the naturally occurring glycerin remains intact along with all its skin-nourishing benefits.

When and how did soap-making begin?

Until about a century ago, all soap was made from animal fats, and much of it was made at home. Families would save the lard from butchering animals to make soap. Lye was made from the ashes from the fireplace or pit. However, in 1916, the first synthetic soap (detergent) was made. This occurred because of a shortage of animal fats, or tallow, during World War I. From that point on, synthetic soaps became popular with women eager to free themselves from yet another exhausting household chore.

Today, however, we not only understand the process of natural soap making better, there are a wide variety of natural oils and ingredients available. Making handmade natural soap has never been easier, and you don’t have to use animal fats to do it. This is great news for vegetarians, vegans and those just wanting a more natural alternative to the “detergent” we us on our hair, our skin and in the sink!

Various Techniques of Soap Making

Various Techniques of Soap Making

Soap making can be an interesting hobby if you know how to go about it in a proper manner. Here are some tips to help you get a hang of what it takes to make soap at home.

Some tips:
1. It is very important that the ingredients used in making soap are in proper proportion and so they should be weighed accurately.
2. You should be aware of what you are doing, soap is not made by just mixing up everything. To make a good soap you should apply a tried and tested formula.
3. Last but not the least, the technique you are using for making soap is vitally important, as good things done in a wrong way will produce wrong output.

The following are some soap making processes:

Cold Process
This is a process that is widely accepted by home-based soap makers. In this process, reaction takes place between an acid and a base, which produces a salt during the molding stage. This process is referred as neutralization.

Semi-boiled Process
When the soap mixture is traced, it is again heated using a double boiler that neutralizes the soap before placing it in the mold.

Full-boiled Process
Unlike other soap making processes, in this method all the required ingredients are mixed in one large container. This soap mixture is exposed to heat that causes neutralization. Many large commercial soap manufacturers use this process to get its by-product called glycerin.

Transparent Soap
As the name goes, transparent soap is made clear by adding solvent like alcohol that prevents crystal formation when the soap solidifies. Transparent soap is commonly called as Glycerin Soap. But this is a misconception, as glycerin is not used in any of the processes to produce a clear or transparent soap. Transparent soap can be drying to the skin.

Melt and Pour Soap
Melt and Pour soap is also called a solid Glycerin blocks. Pure glycerin obtained from animal or vegetable is always in liquid form, which can be solidified by adding some chemicals. Also, detergents are added to produce foam. These soaps many have natural ingredients added to them but the base remains synthetic and also they can be expensive as you are making soap from soap.

Support Local Industries And Get A Quality Product By Purchasing Natural Handmade Soap From Hawaii

Supporting local companies, no matter where you live, is a great idea for several reasons.  By supporting local businesses, you infuse the local economy with money, which typically stays in that economy, going to improve the city or town and to provide employment for local residents.  Such was and continues to be the case with local island soap makers with a manufacturing base in Hawaii.  These are the type of boutique companies that tourists and locals alike seek out, for the quality bath and beauty products including natural handmade soaps that they create using local ingredients found in the warm tropical climate of the Hawaiian Islands.  While those businesses still sell soaps handmade locally, many have expanded to online stores as well, thereby opening up the opportunity for people from the mainland to purchase a locally made product, with the added benefit of giving access to tropical scents and ingredients not typically found elsewhere in colder climates.

Natural handmade soaps from Hawaii will utilize what is available locally for use as ingredients in the handmade soap bar so popular today.  Because of the long growing season and warm climate, in Hawaii soap manufacturers can utilize popular fruits, nuts and flowers into their island soap lines.  These can include coconut, mango, guava, pineapple and jasmine flowers, all distinctively scented and bringing those fragrant qualities to bear on each handmade soap bar produced in Hawaii.

The oil that is expressed from the inner flesh of the coconut brings several important qualities to each of the soaps handmade from this popular ingredient.  Coconut oil is very emollient, and works perfectly in handmade natural soap to soften the skin on face, hands and other body surfaces.  When the coconut oil is heated and combined with other natural ingredients in the production of soaps handmade, one of the extra products produced from this process is glycerin, another well-known skin moisturizer.  When the coconut oil and glycerin are combined into handmade natural soap, the result is a product that can be used often, because it is gentle on the skin and helps to replenish that all-important moisture to the skin.

Now you do not have to travel to the Hawaiian Islands to purchase this wonderful island soap.  Instead, shop from the comfort of your home anywhere in the world, and find the local Hawaiian soaps handmade that smell and work so well, and feel good in knowing that your support of local Hawaiian businesses helps the economy there and makes it possible for small boutique sellers of natural handmade soaps to succeed and continue producing your favorite products..

Making Soap At Home – What You Need To Find Out To Save Time

Making soap at home may bring soap bars which are perfect as gifts. It can also become a way of saving money on commercial soaps. Plus, it could be a worthwhile home based business. By working safely on the ingredients including lye, you now can create special soap bars. Just make sure to carefully use lye as it is risky and is not for children who might join you in making soap at home.

If you choose to follow the common melt and pour process it is also possible and if you decide to let your kids join in the activities, surely the little ones will enjoy making their soaps with this process. Aside from melt and pour method, there is also cold process and the hot process. Be sure to entirely comprehend the process and prepare ingredients before starting to make one. Be ready to follow the instructions to create quality soap.

When making soap at home, the cold process can be followed. This process is commonly used among small businesses to make health spa quality soap bars. It starts with combining lye and fatty oils in a balanced amount. It will then result to saponification. It can involve six weeks in order to complete since it include curing despite the fact that the real soap making can be done for some hours only. Hand-made soaps in shops are formed through the cold process.

Similarly, making soap at home is also achieved by using the hot process which utilizes comparable ingredients and step by step procedures as with the cold process, only that ingredients are stirred and heated over on a stove. Additionally, the melt and pour process has been the easiest and safest of the three which you should not forget to master. Actually, you can also allow your children to work and make their own soap using this process because it is safer for them..

Because both the hot and cold process can be more complicated in making soap at home primarily due to lye usage, you need to take precautionary measure. This substance is put in water. Do not reverse the process or you might just put your hands or other parts of your body in danger. It is best to use gloves or any protective covering when doing the process. Lye is known as an acid substance, thus safety precautions should always be considered such as when kids assist you in making soap at home.

Interesting Soap Making Processes

Interesting Soap Making Processes

Soap making is a challenging task because you decide on the qualities of the soap you will produce. You can add various additives in order to achieve results depending on your desire.

Soap is a common necessity in every household. It is essential for personal hygiene and cleaning our clothes as well as other places in our house. While there are a lot of varieties of soap available in the market, you can make your own soap or turn it into a profitable business. It is quite easy to do soap making.

Basically, soap is made up of vegetable or animal fats. The sodium tallowate comes from beef fat and is commonly used as ingredient in making soap. Softer soaps are typically made of palm oil which is a vegetable oil. Castile soap is made up of pure olive oil. Different oils and butters featuring different qualities are used for soap making. Such ingredients may come from olive oil, coconut, cocoa, palm, shea butter, and hemp oil.

Hand-made soaps are better compared to industrial soap. A hand-made soap is the result of excessive fat or super fatting which leaves a moisturizing effect and ideal for the skin. This can be achieved by putting less lye to the mixture. On the contrary, an industrial soap usually uses more detergent which is not very friendly to our skin. Sometimes soap makers make use of a ready made soap which is melted and poured in different kinds of molds. This method is called melt and pour.

In soap making, there are several processes which you can use depending on your preference. The cold and hot are two of the frequently used processes. Ideally, both cold and hot processes need constant heat for proper saponification. In cold process, above room temperature is required to achieve liquefaction of the fat. It also requires that the lye and fat is maintained warm after mixture to make sure that it is saponified completely. This method is the most popular method used in soap making, too. This process allows the reaction of fats such as olive oil with lye.

Hot processed soap can be immediately used compared to cold processed soap. A great advantage of hot process is that there is no need to know the exact concentration of the lye to achieve successful results. While in cold process, it is essential to know the exact quantity of lye to achieve a mild and skin friendly quality of the soap.

In hot process method, the lye and fat are boiled at temperatures between 80 to 100°C until saponification is achieved. Afterwards, salt must be added in order to precipitate the soap from the solution. Any excessive liquid is drained. While still hot, it is poured into molds and allowed to cool. Saponification charts are used for both methods.

In cold process method, the first thing to do is to use the saponification chart to identify the measurement of saponification value of fats to be used. It can be utilized to compute the right amount of lye to be mixed. You must be careful of the process because un-reacted lye can lead to high pH that may cause skin irritation and burn. However, if lye is insufficient it will cause the soap to be greasy and unpleasant. In order to achieve the best results, it is recommended to formulate the recipes with 4 to 10% discount of lye. This will ensure that the lye will totally react and excess fat is available that’s beneficial for skin conditioning.

In the process, lye is thoroughly dissolved in water and oils are heated at room temperature. Soon as the substances are cool enough, they are mixed together and stirred until no traces remain. After constant stirring it becomes a thin pudding. Then, you can add other recipes such as essential oils, herbs, fragrance oils or any other recipes you wish to add.

After the process, it can be poured into molds. You can use towels to keep them warm. Leave it for 17 to 46 hours to continue with saponification. When the soap is hard enough, it can now be moved out of the mold and cut into desired sizes. The soap can then be used because it has completed saponification. But with cold process soaps, it must be totally hardened and dried for 2 to 5 weeks depending on water content before it is safe to use. If you use caustic soda, it is ideal to cure the soap for 4 weeks.

Learn How To Make Your Own Soap

Learn How To Make Your Own Soap

Soap is something we use every day and we rarely think about how it is made or what ingredients are used to make it.  It is just one of life’s necessities and most times, the soap we purchased is based on television commercials or magazine ads.  Most people don’t know, however, that the commercial soap they are using is technically a detergent and not true soap.

“Most body cleansers on the market today are actually synthetic detergent products . . .  Some of these detergent products are actually marketed as “soap” but are not true soap in the common and legal definition of the word,” according to the FDA website.

Handmade soap is true soap and it is made by mixing an acid and a base together.  In the case of soapmaking, the acid is a combination of vegetable oils and butters, such as cocoa butter and Shea butter.  The base is lye, produced by adding sodium hydroxide to water.  The oils and lye are combined and a process known as saponification occurs.  Once the saponification process is complete, the end result is soap.

Glycerin is a natural byproduct of the soapmaking process.  Commercial soap manufacturers remove the glycerin from their soap, however, handmade soap makers do not.  Glycerin is an humectant and attracts moisture to the skin and is better off left in the soap.

Many people prefer handmade soap over commercial soap and claim it is gentler on their skin.  This may be due to the fact that handmade soap is true soap and not a detergent, therefor, it does not strip of the skin of its natural oils.

It is not difficult to learn how to make homemade soap.  You should, however, have a firm grasp of the basics and understand what safety precautions you should taken prior to attempting to make your own soap.  Once you understand the process, there are many homemade soap recipes and soap making kits to get you started.

Soapmaking is fun and rewarding.  Whether you decide to make soap for fun or profit, the first and most important purchases you should make are soap making books.  As a beginner, or even as a seasoned soap maker, you will find yourself referring to these books often so it is better to own them rather than borrowing them from a library.  You may never buy commercial soap again once you learn how to make your own soap.
